This particular spotlight wand is special because if you put it out in the sun, it will glow in the dark while you are searching! I also appreciate that there is a sleeve inside the cover for the spotlight search tool where it can (hopefully) be safe from getting lost. I used to love these Waldo books when I was a little girl, and the addition of the spotlight search tool makes it even more special. ![]() There are also additional lists of things to look for in every haunting scene, like pirate skeletons, mermaids, witches, and a cat on a broomstick. This is such a cool search activity book! In every scene you have to find Waldo, his dog Woof, Wenda, the wizard Whitebeard, and the Waldo's crazy opposite, Odlaw. The books consist of a series of detailed double-page spread illustrations depicting dozens or more people doing a variety of amusing things at a given location. However, each scene is covered by a dark screen, and you have to use the spotlight search tool, a handy cardboard wand, to "light up" the scenes. (called Where's Waldo in Canada and the USA) is a British series of children's puzzle books created by English illustrator Martin Handford. ![]() And somewhere in the chaos of sea monsters, dragons, and vampires, Waldo is hiding among all the red and white. There are a lot of festive activities going on as the monsters prepare for Halloween. Waldo and his friends are surrounded by hundreds of monsters, ghosts, and creepy creatures, both "real" and in costume. ![]()

Querelle was waiting, his head bowed and the blood mounting to his face. A few of the illustrations follow below, many more of the series can be found scattered across various websites. Even though copies were seized by the authorities, and the author fined, Cocteau’s involvement did little to harm his public reputation, something that’s impossible to imagine happening elsewhere. ![]() Querelle de Brest was published in a limited edition of 525 copies illustrated throughout by Jean Cocteau who didn’t avoid the pornographic details. So in honour of all that, here’s a small collection of Querellerie past and present. The film is still only the briefest sketch of Genet’s novel (although Genet biographer Edmund White enjoyed it) but I like the overheated atmosphere, the phallic set designs, Franco Nero (hey, it’s Django Gay!), and the film as a whole is a fitting memorial to Brad Davis, everyone’s favourite sweating matelot. This weekend’s viewing was Fassbinder’s Querelle (1982) which is marvellous in its new Blu-ray transfer, and a great improvement on the muddy picture of the earlier DVD release. ![]() ![]() ![]() These include: "Dear one, I am really there for you" "Dear one, I know that you are there, and I am really happy about it" "Dear one, I know that you are suffering, and that is why I am here for you" and "Dear one, I am suffering, please help me." In the concluding section of the book, Thich Nhat Hanh explains how love can help us to heal our own pain, fear, and negativity. He goes on to offer a mantra practice for generating love that consists of expressing four key statements or intentions in our relationships. In True Love he offers readers the technique of conscious breathing as a method for synchronizing the mind and body to establish the conditions of love. ![]() In order to love in a real way, Thich Nhat Hanh explains, we need to learn how to be fully present in our lives. In his characteristically direct, simple, and compassionate style, he explores the four key aspects of love as described in the Buddhist tradition: lovingkindness, compassion, joy, and freedom. In this little treasure, Thich Nhat Hanh offers a Buddhist view of love along with techniques for manifesting it in our daily lives. ![]() ![]() In Cinder, a teenage cyborg (half human, half machine) must deal with a wicked stepmother, start a rebellion against the evil Queen Levana, and decide how she feels about a handsome prince. I could still follow along and get a solid idea of what Sykes is talking about. Sykes makes the Neanderthals and everything we know about them as accessible as possible, but like many science based books, there are going to be aspects that either go over your head if you’re not in that field, or that perhaps you simply aren’t majorly interested in. But over the years, those studying our ancestors have discovered more and more about these mysterious people, and in Kindred, Rebecca Wragg Sykes – contemporary British Palaeolithic archaeologist – gives us comprehensive, detailed information about Neanderthals, presenting a view that would be new to most of the general public.ĭid I understand everything discussed in this book?ĭid that detract from my enjoyment and interest? There is another reading in which Gilman's resistance to story, his deliberate evasion of it even as he builds the novel's world brick by brick, paragraph by paragraph, has a point, a goal, to it. There is one reading of The Half-Made World in which it is a 500 page exercise in worldbuilding, whose author might get around to writing a story in its sequel. Such suspicions afflict the novel, and the experience of reading it. In fact, the irony of bestowing such a title on a novel whose setting is as thought-out, as detailed, and as richly realized as the world in which Felix Gilman's third novel takes place is so glaring that one can't help but suspect Gilman of making a joke. There is nothing half-made about The Half-Made World. ![]() |
